Guangzhou Conghua litchi garden with LED light to control the stalk moth

At present conghua litchi is in the young fruit period. In the Gaojiajinggang Hongnuo litchi demonstration base in Shuixi Village, Aotou Town, Conghua District, Guangzhou, whenever night falls, the LED lights in the base will turn on on time, and the host of the base uses the physical prevention and control technology of light interference to treat litchi insects.

Dong Yizhi, an associate researcher at the Plant Protection Institute of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said litchi stalk moth is the most important pest in litchi and is also the primary target for prevention and control. The physical prevention and control technology of light interference is simply to "light up" the litchi, in order to prevent the growth of the stalk moth.

At present, Conghua litchi is in the young fruiting stage, which is the key period for the prevention and control of stalk borers. Dong explained that litchi stalk borer belongs to nocturnal insects, which are stationary during the day and active at night for mating, laying eggs and other reproductive behaviors. When light is stronger than 10lx, adult reproduction is disrupted and the number of offspring is greatly reduced.

In litchi garden, LED white lights are installed between plants and rows, with about 15-30 lights per mu. Lighting at night can change the small environment of the orchard, so that the litchi stalk borer at night can be mistaken for the day, and reduce the reproduction, thus inhibiting the growth of the insect population. During the peak period of litchi stalk moth infestation, light up the light for 10-12 hours every night until the fruit is harvested.

Li Jinhua, a staff member at the base, said he has turned on the lights of the lychee garden every night since April. So far, light interference physical control techniques have been effective in pest control. In the past, at least two injections were needed by the end of the month to control the worm. However, from April to now, there is no need to use any pesticides in litchi orchard, which increases the effect of green prevention and control and reduces the planting cost.

After a period of observation, the staff of the base found that the light interference system effectively reduced the field population density of litchi butt borers and the rate of litchi fruit borers. Through the physical prevention and control technology of light interference, the number of litchi butt borers laying eggs was reduced by 99%, and the amount of pesticide used in litchi fruit and fruit period was reduced by 40%-60%.

According to Deng Cailian, senior agronomist of The Agricultural Technology promotion Center of Conghua District, at present, the whole conghua district is vigorously promoting the green prevention and control technology of lychee diseases and insect pests, and promoting the green prevention and control technology through light interference technology, effectively reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and improving the quality of fruit.
